Why Are Rank Tags Broken?
Why Are Rank Tags Broken? #
If rank prefixes fail to render in chat or the TAB list, appear as placeholder text, or have unusual spacing gaps, review the explanations and solutions below.
1. Root Causes #
1. Joining with a Version Below 1.21.9 #
All rank, VIP, and staff badges on PurpurMC are rendered using the native player object component mechanism introduced in Minecraft 1.21.9.
- If you join using an older version (below 1.21.9), your game client does not recognize this modern text component.
- Consequently, rank tags will be completely invisible or missing.
2. Playing on Bedrock Edition ([xxx player head] Text)
#
- The Bedrock Edition platform does not possess this player object component feature.
- When connecting via Bedrock, because the client cannot parse the component, you will see raw placeholder text such as
[xxx player head]instead of the visual tag. This is due to Bedrock's platform limitations.
3. Chat Head Mods Causing Spacing Gaps #
- If you observe awkward spaces or gaps between ranks and player names in chat, you likely have an external mod installed that inserts player heads at the beginning of chat lines (such as Chat Heads or similar mods).
- PurpurMC already includes this feature natively on the server side.
- When an external client mod attempts to add a head alongside the server's built-in component, the two conflict and create broken spacing.
2. How to Fix #
Follow these steps to restore clean and aligned rank tags:
- Connect with Minecraft 1.21.9 or the Latest Release:
Ensure you launch the game with at least version 1.21.9 (or the latest recommended release) so your client natively supports the player object component.
- Remove External Chat Head Mods:
Delete or disable any third-party mod (e.g. Chat Heads) from your mod loader (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, CurseForge). Once the conflicting mod is removed, rank tags will immediately render properly with normal spacing.
- Note for Bedrock Players:
The [xxx player head] text on Bedrock is normal behavior caused by Bedrock's lack of support for player object components. For the complete, designed visual experience, we recommend joining using the latest Java Edition.
